The Deepings – The Future – What you said about our plans and ideas

The Deepings Management Partnership is the Town Centre Management Partnership for the Deepings area.

We are a group of volunteers from Community and Business organisations with representatives from the local authorities who are working to improve the vitality and viability of the Deepings, focussing on the Town Centre.

We recently consulted the public and various local authorities on their Action Plan for the forthcoming 5 years.

We told you about some of the ideas we had to make the Deepings a better place to live, work and shop and asked you what you thought about them…

You told us that you liked the following ideas: So we:
Using the Old Market Place for events and themed markets Planned another European Market for 15 March
Putting more signs up to direct visitors to the Car Park Installed a new sign by the Police Station
More litter bins Installed 10 new bins throughout the area
A Community Watch scheme Helped to start up the new Community Watch Scheme
Looking after Welland Gardens Installed a new picnic bench there so you could sit by the river
Expanding the Community Centre Are continuing to support the centre to raise funds for the work
Supporting the Deepings Business Club Helped them raise money to provide training for their members

You also said that you liked these ideas: You told us that you weren’t so keen on the following:
Ornamental Columns to house floral displays and Christmas lights Lots of extra directional signage
A Shopfront grant scheme A coach parking bay
A new cycle route for the area
Improving the Precincts
Improving the Precincts
Promoting Tourism
So we are keeping these on our agenda to look at in the future. So we are not looking to progress these items at this time.

You also made the following suggestions: Action:
To create better play facilities for Children We spoke to Market Deeping Town Council and Deeping St James Parish Council who informed us that they had this matter in hand already.
Create a Town mural We hope to be able to include a mural or similar as part of the work on the Precincts area. We hope to work with Market Deeping Town Council on this when the time comes.
Provide a later bus service to Peterborough We have spoken to the bus operators who inform us that it is not a viable option at this time. We are keeping this on our agenda to look at again the future.
Create more places to sit We have recently put some more seating in Welland Gardens so that people to sit and enjoy the river in the Town Centre.
Illuminate the bridge in Deeping St James We have mentioned this to Deeping St James Parish Council. We may be able to look at this at some point in the future but at present we are looking to try to address the other items on our list first.
Increase the provision of street cleaning The streets and pavements are cleaned on a very regular basis by the local councils. We have informed them of this suggestion as this lies within their area of responsibility.
Regulate traffic, especially large vehicles through the Town Centre We have informed the relevant authorities of your suggestions and wait to hear back at present.
Bring more boutique and speciality shops in to the Town Centre We can not control what shops move in or out of the Town. We are working with South Kesteven District Council to build tools such as a website and area information packs designed to promote the Deepings as a great place to do business.
Make the Deepings a Plastic Bag free Town Centre We have asked the Deepings Business Club to help us out with this one as we have so many other items on our agenda at the moment. Watch this space…
You also suggested that we should focus our efforts on the whole of the Deepings instead of just the Town Centre As a group of volunteers there is only so much that we can do in the time we have. We consider the whole of the Deepings in all of our projects and often work outside the Town Centre boundary on our projects where appropriate. However we try to focus our efforts on the Town Centre as we feel it is the most beneficial use of our limited time and resources as what happens in the Town Centre effects everyone who lives in the Town, Parish and surrounding villages.

Although the consultation period for our Action Plan has now closed we are still very interested to hear your views. Please contact Sarah Bailey (Town Centre Manager) at tcm@deeping.co.uk with any comments or suggestions.

We will review the Action Plan each year so watch this space for further information.

Please note that all comments made by respondents have not been listed due to space constraints but all comments received were discussed by the DMP at a full committee meeting.
We have included all comments that were raised by more than one individual and detailed on a significant majority basis.
