Setting:-

The Deepings is located adjacent to the River Welland, and to the immediate south east of the crossroads of the A15 and A16. The A15 running from Peterborough, some seven miles to the south and northwards to Lincoln, with the A16 from Stamford, some seven miles to the west and on to Spalding, Boston and beyond. Both these main arterial roads form a dual carriageway bypassing the town to the west before curving around the north western edge of Market Deeping and going their separate ways to the north and northeast.

Over recent times the town has witnessed sizeable growth in housing, and this expansion could continue over the next few years with the development of the Local Development Framework. From a population of 800 in the 1940s, the Deepings can now boast some 14,000, this increasing to over 20,000 when the hinterland is included.

The Deepings formed the Deepings Management Partnership in 2001, and commissioned ‘The Deepings Survey’ a document for the development of a strategy and action plan to develop the town. MarketMinder completed the survey in September 2001, which was essentially a study intended to cover the key areas of transport, shopping, public services, amenities, information, tourism and community planning. This survey concluded what local people thought about the town and its services. Market Deeping Town Council commissioned a second document, which was produced in late 2003 and was titled a ‘Healthcheck for Market Deeping’. The Healthcheck process was designed and promoted by the Countryside Agency on a national basis. The Healthcheck helps local communities find out more about the town where they live and its rural hinterland. Those of the community involved in the Market Deeping Healthcheck compiled a wide range of data and have pooled their views and knowledge about key questions in order to identify key issues, which Market Deeping faces, and identify responses.

Further to the 2004 Healthcheck, the Deepings Management Partnership supported a Welland wide benchmarking exercise in 2006 in collaboration with the Welland SSP. This project collected a wealth of data regarding the status of the town centre. This survey work is to be completed annually in order to track and monitor change.

The Partnership have worked towards the goals identified in the 2005 – 2007 Action Plan and is now in a position to re-focus their efforts in line with the remaining Healthcheck priorities and issues identified by the Welland SSP Benchmarking exercise. With the wealth of information, views and opinions accumulated, there is ongoing opportunity to identify further projects and activity over and above that already identified and addressed. The Partnership formed an Action Plan working group in late 2006 to develop a revised plan of action for the work of the DMP in the Deepings that links in with Parish, Town, District and County priorities. With consideration to the DMP mission statement (“Working in Partnership to make the Deepings a great place to shop, work, live, visit, and have fun.”), the 2004 Healthcheck, 2006 Benchmarking data and a number of ideas for projects raised by committee members, this document aims to co-ordinate ideas for projects and create a focus for some ‘on the ground action’ to occur over the next 5 years.
