The DMP have sponsored the Make DeepingGreen campaign to rid the community of plastic shopping bags by Christmas 2008.

With the average UK shopper using over 300 plastic bags per year, that's a lot of wasted raw materials and damage to our environment.

The group, consisting of local business owners, residents and a delegate from South Kesteven District Council have held several public meetings in the town to guage public feelings and to educate retailers and residents on the benefits of ditching plastic bags in favour of reusable alternatives.

In July 2008, the group embarked on Phase 1 of the campaign by taking delivery of 2000 MakeDeepingGreen cotton bags which they then distributed at the Deeping Carnival, the Deeping St James Community Primary School Fayre and outside the Co-Op (Rainbow) store in Market Deeping.

Phase 2 began on September 1st with a call to all Deeping retailers and residents to make this coming Christmas a Green Christmas by making the Deepings a completely Plastic Bag Free area.
